District 25 Update for June 8, 2018

Good afternoon!

We hope you’ve been enjoying these sunny evenings as much as we have – it finally feels like summer! We understand that you probably want to get off to your weekend and outdoor adventures, but before you do we wanted to share a brief note on some community updates.

Teaching Entrepreneurship

This Saturday, June 9th, is Alaska Lemonade Day! This program selects a day each year to teach our youth about business, economics and confidence by helping them start their own lemonade stand. It began with a vision to shape Alaska into a place that breeds, grows and attracts entrepreneurs. Each child that registers receives a backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the lessons of Lemonade Day like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some.

ANWR Update

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced that they will be investing over $4 million in construction to support drilling in ANWR. This money will go towards six projects designed to improve or construct existing outbuildings and facilities needed for oil exploration readiness and research operations. Our office has been very encouraged by the progress made thus far by private sector companies, along with state and federal agencies towards creating new jobs and growing our resource development potential in Alaska.

Additionally, we were recently able to participate in the public scoping meeting on the Coastal Plan Oil and Gas Leasing Program. We shared the positive economic impacts this project could have in our state and encouraged leaders to closely involve Alaskans throughout the process. Support for opening ANWR has long been a top priority for our office, so we’re very excited to see this dream begin becoming a reality.

Seward Highway Project Update

Considerable work is underway along one of our District’s main thoroughfares, the Seward Highway. This coming week further road and ramp entrances to the Seward Highway will be closed off. Until Monday, June 11, the northbound Dowling Road Off-Ramp will be closed. Likewise, starting June 12 at 8 p.m., the southbound Dowling Road On-Ramp to the Seward Highway will closed for roughly 3 weeks. Detour routes will be open and accessible to the public. Please follow the signs and speed limits in this major construction zone.

As always, if you have any questions for our office please reach out! Email us at: Rep.Charisse.Millett@akleg.gov or give us a call at 907-269-0222. Have a wonderful weekend!

All my best,
